What an llms.txt file does
llms.txt is a plain text file that sits at the root of your site, next to robots.txt. It gives AI tools a short map: what your site is, and which pages are worth reading.
No one is forced to read it. Some AI tools already look for it, and the file takes about ten minutes to write. This free llms.txt generator handles the layout, so you only supply the words.
This becomes the first line of the file.

Leave a blank line between paragraphs. A single line break on its own turns into a space.
Paste your sitemap.xml, or a plain list of web addresses, one per line. We work out which one you gave us.
We group the links by folder and guess a title from the last part of each address, then add them to your sections below. Nothing you have already typed is removed. We take the first 50 links, because a short file is the whole point of the format.

The llms.txt convention keeps lower priority links under a heading called Optional, so a tool reading your site can skip them when it needs a shorter version. It always goes last.

What is llms.txt?
A plain markdown file you put at the root of your site. It says what your business does and lists the pages that matter most. The audience is AI models, so treat it as a short guided tour of your site.
Do AI models read llms.txt yet?
Support is patchy. It is a young proposal that no big model has promised to follow. The file takes an hour to build and nothing to maintain, so there is very little downside to publishing one and seeing what happens.
Where do I put the llms.txt file?
At the root, so it sits at yoursite.com/llms.txt. Some sites also publish a longer llms-full.txt with the full text of their pages. Start with the short one and see if anything picks it up.
What should go in it?
One line on what the business does, then links to the pages you would hand a new customer: your main services, your best guides, your contact page. Leave the rest out. Twenty links you stand behind is the right size.
