How long should a meta description be?
About 150 to 160 characters. Google cuts it off past that, and a line that stops mid-sentence looks careless. Write a full sentence that ends on purpose.
How long should a title tag be?
Around 60 characters or fewer, and lead with the thing people search for. The brand name goes at the end, if it goes in at all. If the title gets cut, the important half should already have been read.
Do meta descriptions affect rankings?
Not directly. They affect whether anyone clicks, which is the part that pays. Google rewrites them often, and it rewrites a good one far less than a bad one.
What is a canonical tag for?
It tells search engines which address is the real one when several show the same page. Get it wrong and you can drop a page out of Google by accident. The canonical has to match the address you serve, trailing slash and all.
